When the Kainai Nation unveiled their new Twin Rinks Arenas this August, they didn’t just open a sports facility. They opened a statement of resilience, progress, and hope for generations to come.
The project, which replaces a 54-year-old rink, represents a monumental leap forward for the community. Designed with state-of-the-art sustainability at its core, the arenas feature geothermal heating and cooling, energy-conscious lighting that monitors inactivity, and a CO2 ice-making plant that replaces traditional ammonia-based systems. These initiatives reflect the community’s deep cultural commitment to treating the earth with respect—ensuring the land remains available for future generations.
As Joe Fraser, ClearSecure’s sales manager for western Canada explains, the product was chosen not just for its durability, but for its ability to bring more natural light into the building—promoting health, wellness, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
“When you design with a human aspect, you introduce more light, which warms the soul and the whole vibe of a building,” Fraser reflects. “It makes it more welcoming for all occupants.”
The true significance of the project, however, lies beyond the materials. On inauguration day, hundreds of community members gathered to celebrate. For them, these arenas are more than a place to play hockey. They represent a space where youth will learn teamwork, perseverance, and camaraderie—skills that build self-esteem and shape productive members of the community.
The arenas also represent trust. This marks the second project where the Kainai Nation has chosen RockGlass, having previously used the product in a daycare facility. As Fraser notes, the community has seen the performance firsthand and understands the long-term benefits of reducing maintenance and breakage—especially in remote areas where repairs can be challenging.
